The leadership of Kagadi Town Council Boda Boda Riders, has issued a 30-day ultimatum to individuals illegally transporting passengers within the town council to register with recognized stages or risk arrest and impoundment of their motorcycles.

The resolution was reached during a heated meeting held at Kagadi Freedom Tree, on Monday attended by boda boda riders, their town council leadership, and officials from the Resident District Commissioner’s office.

According to Mr. Ategeka Hamuza, Chairperson of Kagadi Town Council Boda Boda Riders, the move aims to curb emerging crimes such as motorcycle theft and scamming of passengers, while creating fair opportunities for legally registered riders.

He said all riders operating within the town council must register with one of the 20 recognized boda boda stages within 30 days or face enforcement measures.

The decision has been welcomed by some riders, who believe it will streamline operations and eliminate wrongdoers tarnishing the industry’s image.

However, a section of riders opposed the proposal, arguing that it could limit their ability to operate beyond town council boundaries and spark conflicts within the wider district boda boda fraternity.

Speaking at the same meeting, Mr. Edward Birungi, Assistant RDC of Kagadi District, supported the move, saying it will help combat crime.

He, however, advised leaders to grant a grace period to allow affected riders to comply with registration requirements.
