Farmers in Hoima district have been urged to prioritize planting crops with a short life span of maturity in order to fetch high produce given the limited rains expected in the current season.

Dr Charles Kajura the Hoima district production officer (DPO) says farmers need to embrace crops which will mature the next two months such that they are able to manage the current season with limited rains adding that farmers may struggle with late maturing crops when the rains fade.

He says in most parts of the districts according to the experts in the department of meteorology under the ministry of water and environment, rains are expected for the next two to three months which is from this march up to late May adding that there is need for farmers to be cautious on which crops to embrace during the shot span season.

He made the remarks as officials from the department of meteorology on Monday engaged farmers and other stakeholders on the enhanced climate resilience in Africa, a project which began from Rwanda to support bean farmers. The engaged was held at the Youth Centre

Gordon Ggugwa working meteorology says the project carries a purpose of supporting farmers in bean hubs by alerting them on the expected forecasts in their areas through down scaling this information locally in their areas.

He reveals the project target districts include Hoima, Kikuube, Nakaseke, Rukiga and Kisoro. He says that when they come on ground, they engage the key people in discovering different challenges on ground and providing advisories to help them get the expected yields from their farms.

Nicholas Kajura, a farmer and trainer in Kiragura parish in Kitoba sub county encourages farmers to utilize the current rains carefully by embracing the early maturing seeds inorder to catch up with the season.
