The police in Hoima City have arrested a suspect in connection to the brutal murder of Moses Katusabe, a mathematics teacher at Bwikya Muslim Secondary School. Katusabe was attacked by two unidentified assailants armed with Pangas at his home in Kicwamba Cell, Hoima East Division, on Friday night around 9:30 p.m.

The attackers severely hacked him on the head and neck. Katusabe succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. Following the incident, police launched a manhunt for the perpetrators behind this gruesome attack.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest during an exclusive interview with Uganda Radio Network (URN). He, however, refrained from disclosing further details about the suspect, citing concerns that it could compromise the ongoing investigation, especially as the police continue to search for additional suspects.

Hakiza noted that the suspect, currently detained at Hoima City Central Police Station, has been cooperating with detectives. The brutal killing of Katusabe has left residents and local leaders in shock. They have called on the police to ensure a thorough investigation to bring all those responsible to justice. This case has highlighted a broader concern in the Albertine Region, where murder incidents have been on the rise, causing significant unease among residents.

September alone saw 38 murder cases recorded across the Albertine Region. This included various motives, ranging from domestic violence and mob justice to land disputes. Kagadi District registered the highest number of cases with 10, followed by Kikuube with 6, and Kakumiro with 5. Kiryandongo and Masindi each recorded 4 cases, while Kibaale had 3, Hoima District 3, Hoima City 2, and Buliisa 1.

On September 18, 2024, another tragic incident occurred when 22-year-old Peter Atuhura, a resident of Bujumbura East Cell in Hoima West Division, was stabbed to death. Atuhura was attacked while heading home with his brother, Conrad Kwikiriza.

The rise in murder cases has prompted authorities to increase security efforts in affected areas. The police are working with local leaders to address the contributing factors, including domestic issues, community disputes, and land wrangles.
