Police in Kakumiro District have embarked on community policing initiatives aimed at curbing the rising cases of lawlessness and insecurity in the area. This follows growing concerns from residents of Kakindo Town Council, who have decried the increasing incidents of murder that have shaken their community in recent weeks.
According to the LC III Chairperson of Kakindo Town Council, Gertrude Asiimwe, the insecurity has left residents living in fear after the brutal killing of two people within one week. The victims were identified as Katende Expelito, aged 52, a resident of Kyakacwende Cell, and Amos Munyakole, aged 38.
Reports indicate that Amos was intercepted and murdered by unknown assailants on Tuesday this week while traveling from Mwitanzige to Kakindo Town, where he had rented a room to operate a bar. Asiimwe appealed to Kakumiro District Police to intensify security operations, deploy more officers at Kakindo Police Post, and conduct regular night patrols to ensure the safety of residents.
She also encouraged locals to form neighborhood watch groups during the festive season to enhance community vigilance and collective responsibility in fighting crime.
The Kakumiro District Police Commander, David Otabongo, confirmed that police are aware of the growing insecurity in Kakindo Town Council. He said the force has initiated community policing programs to engage residents and local leaders in identifying and addressing the root causes of the recent murders.
Otabongo revealed that he has instructed the District Community Liaison Officer, Sgt. Fred Kugonza, to collaborate with Kakindo Town Council officials and residents in organizing community sensitization meetings on security awareness. He further urged the public to remain alert and responsible for their own safety, emphasizing that security begins with every individual.
