Hoima Districts Two More Solar-Powered Water Supply Systems Worth Over UGX 1.2 Billion

Thousands of local residents in Hoima district have a reason to smile after the government handed over two completed solar-powered water supply systems to Hoima district local government.

The two projects were handed over to Hoima district leadership in presence of the Hoima Resident Commissioner-RDC Rodgers Mbabazi, the LCV chairman Uthman Mubarak Mugisha among other leaders.

The Kyarusuara solar powered water supply system in Kyarusura village, Kibanjwa parish in Kitoba sub county was handed over to the district on Thursday 23rd October 2025. The supply system, which was contracted by Nexus Green UK limited, cost about UGX 543 Million.It was funded by the government of Uganda with a loan from the United Kingdom Export Finaces-UKEF. The system has 10 yard-taps in the village.

The same contractor and the ministry of water and environment also handed over the Kigorobya solar powered water supply system in Kigorobya town council which cost about 626 million shillings.

The system which was an upgrade the one that was existing, will have six public service taps and 20 yard-taps. The district handed it over to Western Umbrella for continuity in management.

The Hoima district LCV Chairman Uthuman Mugisha said the system will help supply water to Kigorobta I,Kigorobya II,Kiryandongo,Kihesi and Kisukuma areas.
‘‘Hoima district is steadily improving on safe water coverage and the coming onboard of such systems will help us improve on lives of our people’’. Uthuman said.

The Hoima Chief Administrative Officer Ssempala Emmanuel who was represented by the senior assistant secretary said that people should improve on sanitation and hygiene in order to keep the water safe.

The Hoima Resident district commissioner Rodgers Mbabazi commended the government for working with development partners to secure funds to put up such huge water supply systems. He warned the general public against vandalizing the solar system installation which he described as sabatoge.

‘‘Let us protect these projects for sustainable use. We will deal with whoever vandalizes the installations on this project. People should access safe water and have the quality of their lives improved’’ Mbabazi said.

According to the Hoima district water department report 2025, safe water coverage has increased from 74.29 percent in 2024 to 75.07 percent in 2025.
