Sugarcane Farmers in Kikuube Reject Proposed Tax on Cane Trucks

By Leilah Bbaale

Sugarcane out growers in Kikuube district have rejected plans by Kikuube district local government to levy taxes on trucks transporting sugarcane.

Recently, Kikuube district executive committee passed a resolution to levy Sh10,000 on each truck loaded with sugarcane that passes within the territory of the district.

However, the famers have protested against the tax claiming its double taxation.

Justus Birungi, the spokesperson of Hoima and Kikuube Sugarcane out growers association says that company where they supply the sugarcane pays government taxes.

He says that when the company is determining the cane prices, it also considers the issues of taxes.

Max Omuto, the chairperson of the out growers says that district imposed the tax of farmers without involving the farmers and challenge the district leader to revise these tax.

He said that the district levying such tax on farmers was unfair because farmers incur several costs as they grow and harvest sugarcane.
