Several refugees have benefited from the economic empowerment project in Kyangwali refugees’ settlement camp in Kikuube district.
During a graduation in Kyangwali refugee settlement camp Mangadalene Ndagire the chief of party for the Sustainable Market Inclusive Livelihood Pathways to Self-Reliance (SMILES) implemented by AVSI said that the project which was founded by IKEA Foundation worked with 14,000 households extremely poor within the camp
Alfred Agaba Biribonwa, the deputy chief of party for the SMILES project said that the project is a five-year initiative funded by the IKEA Foundation.
Agaba said that they worked with 14,000 extremely poor refugee and host community households in Kyaka II and Kyangwali Refugee Settlements in Western Uganda with the aim of improving their livelihoods.
The project was implemented by AVSI Foundation in partnership with DAI Global LLC Renewable Energy, Powering Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods Enhancement (REPARLE), Innovations for Poverty Action and Makerere University Kampala
Justine Onjiri the chairperson of Umoja group in Kasete parish, Kabwoya sub-county Kikuube district a host community said that through the project they have been taught modern farming methods which have helped them to improve on their incomes
Ibrahim Katabuka the chairperson for the Kyebitaka village block 75 in the camp said that they have four savings groups within their block which have helped many refugees to save and start projects.
