Land related cases continue to overwhelm Uganda Human Rights Commission mostly originating from Buliisa and Kiryandongo districts in the Albertine Region.

According to Betty Enangu Nangoli, the Regional Human Rights Officer for Hoima disclosed that the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) office in Hoima is grappling with a surge in land-related disputes.

Nangoli says the office has received 70 cases of land wrangles from January 2025 to date and the majority of these cases originate from the districts of Buliisa and Kiryandongo.

She revealed that many of these land disputes involve allegations of intimidation by security personnel saying this has further complicated the already sensitive issues surrounding land ownership and access in the region.

Enangu now says the UHRC’s involvement aims to provide a framework for resolving these disputes while protecting the rights of all parties involved.

Nangoli noted that torture cases being handled by the commission nowadays are mostly historical, dating back to 2008-2023. This indicates that while the commission is working to address past human rights abuses, it is also focused on resolving current issues, particularly those related to land disputes.
