Two women are in custody at Hoima central police station for the alleged theft of a newborn baby boy from Kigorobya Health Centre IV.
The suspects are Julian Kusemererwa 21, a resident of Kisaka village in Kisukuma parish, Kisukuma sub county and Zam Kyakua 66, a resident of Kigorobya 2 cell in Kigorobya town council. They were arrested on Tuesday.
The suspects on Sunday stole a newly born baby boy from Florence Nyangoma who had given birth at the health facility.
Information gathered by Spice FM indicates that Nyangoma, a resident of Kyeremya village in Kiganja sub-county in Hoima district delivered the baby on Sunday at around 10:30 a.m. from the health facility.
On Sunday at around 5:50 p.m., a woman disguised as a nurse approached Nyangoma and requested that she hands over the baby to her claiming she was taking the child for immunization.
According to Nyangoma, after waiting for 30 minutes for the baby to be returned to her in vain, she became suspicious and alerted the management of the health facility. Â They searched the entire facility but could not find the baby.
This prompted her to report the matter to the police who immediately swung into action and commenced investigations.
Police immediately deployed a team of detectives to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the baby from the health facility.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson in an interview with Uganda Radio Network (URN) on Wednesday noted that police recovered the stolen baby from the residence of Kyakua in Kigorobya 2 cell on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Hakiza, Kyakua and Kusemererwa planned, coordinated and connived to steal the baby from the health facility.
Lawrence Baluku, the in charge of Kigorobya Health Centre IV explains that, after recovery, the baby was subjected to various medical tests and the child was found to be in good health. The child has since been reunited with the mother.
