More than 100 farmers in the Kikuube district have formed a cooperative for grain.
The farmers under Bugambe Sub County Asobora Farmer’s Cooperative Society have savings of more than Sh1m.
John Barikagira, the cooperative chairperson says their main objective is to enable farmers to access better-improved varieties of seeds, advance technology and mechanization of their agricultural engagements.
The farmers on Monday received the cooperative Certificate of Registration and bylaws.
Evelyn Katwesige, the Kikuube district commercial officer says the cooperative was offered a two year probation certificate. She says the establishment of the cooperative is a solution to middlemen and financial aid for farmers.
The kikuube district chairman Peter Banura said cooperatives are a unifying factor for famers if they are to eradicate poverty and improve their household incomes.
While officiating the hand over, the Kikuube Resident District Commissioner Amlan Tumusiime commended the farmers for the idea adding that this will help them to lobby for funds from Microfinance Support Centre.
