Police in Masindi have foiled an attempted armed robbery at Gaz Petro Station in Central Division, Masindi Municipality, arresting one suspect and recovering a pump-action firearm and a knife.
The incident occurred around midnight on Monday when two armed suspects travelling on motorcycle registration number UGG 529P allegedly attacked a security guard at the fuel station.
According to Solomon Mugisa, the Albertine North Regional Community Liaison Officer and Acting Regional Police Spokesperson, the suspects first attempted to lure the guard into repositioning their motorcycle before allegedly holding him at gunpoint.
A struggle ensued as the guard resisted the attackers, sustaining injuries in the process.
Mugisa says a police patrol team responded swiftly and intervened, rescuing the injured guard and arresting one of the suspects, identified as 43-year-old Ronald Odong. The suspect is being held at Masindi Central Police Station, while police have launched a manhunt for his accomplice.
Police recovered a pump-action firearm, a knife and the motorcycle allegedly used in the attempted robbery. Mugisa commended the security guard for his vigilance and bravery, as well as the police officers for their prompt response.
He has also urged members of the public, security personnel and business operators to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals, movements or activities to the nearest police station.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
