Uganda Police Force’s marine unit has strengthened its operational capacity with the acquisition of nine high-speed boats aimed at improving security patrols, rescue missions and emergency response on the country’s water bodies.
Speaking during the commissioning of the boats at the police marine base in Kigo, Kampala, the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba said the investment in new equipment is part of a wider strategy by the force to improve operational capacity in critical areas, including training, accommodation, uniforms, forensic services, CCTV infrastructure and other capabilities.
He described Uganda’s water bodies as critical drivers of economic growth, supporting sectors such as agriculture, trade, transportation, energy, tourism, industry and manufacturing.
However, he warned that lakes and rivers remain vulnerable to maritime crimes and accidents, which have consequences for both public safety and economic activities.
Byakagaba cited recent incidents as a reminder of the need to strengthen emergency response and safety enforcement.
He mentioned the April 29, 2026 canoe accident on River Nguse in Kagadi district, where 10 people lost their lives, noting that recovery efforts took considerable time and required collaboration between the Police Marine Unit and the UPDF Marine Unit.
The police chief also stressed that many incidents commonly referred to as accidents can be prevented if the right measures are taken in time.
He urged the police and other stakeholders to prioritise protection of human life through improved enforcement of safety regulations.
Byakagaba further called for zero tolerance towards overloading on both waterways and roads, saying compliance with safety measures is key to preventing unnecessary loss of lives.
