Fear has gripped residents of Mandwiiga village, Butoole parish in Kyangwari Sub-County, Kikuube district, after four people of the same family died following suffocation from charcoal fumes.
The incident happened over the weekend when the victims lit a charcoal stove and started preparing meals in a shelter where they were sleeping leading to the accumulation of toxic carbon monoxide fumes believed to have caused their deaths.
They were found on Sunday dead in their temporary shelter made of tarpaulins.
The deceased has been identified as Jane Kansiime 54 years and her grandchildren including Janepher Nyiramashenjeso 13, Kwizeera 10 years and Phoiona Mutetsi 7 years old all residents of Mandwiiga village in Kyangwari Sub-County.
The Butoole parish internal security officer-Deus Kisembo confirmed the incident and said the investigations by police have begun to establish the exact cause of death.
He cautioned the public against the unsafe use of charcoal stoves.
By press time police forensic teams were on scene to conduct postmortem.
