Hundreds of people have been left homeless after mudslides Bulambuli District.
The landslides were triggered by torrential rains which started pounding the district on Sunday through Monday morning. Some of the villages affected included Kifudu, Kikuyu, Nakitembeti, Nambekye, Lukungu, Kikolo West and Mapeera in Namisuni, Elgon North County.
Esther Zemeyi, 40, had her home in Mapeera village swept away including the graves of her relatives.
According to Ramzan Twalla, the District head of disaster management says that more than 20 houses were buried in the rubble while 371 people have been displaced. Twalla, also added that the number of affected people could still go up because they are still assessing the general damage left behind by the disaster.
Henry Levi Magona, Secretary Works and Natural Resources Bulambuli noted that some of the key infrastructures such as the roads were cut off leaving people stranded without access to safe places, health centres, schools or markets.
Geoffrey Bisagati, the Namisuni sub-county chief, says residents who have sought shelter at the sub-county headquarters basic are in dire need of humanitarian support.
