Kikuube health department has today kick started the treatment of Bilharzia among education institutions along the shores of Lake Albert.

The Kikuube district vice Chairman Vicente Opio said that the district received drugs from USAID to treat bilharzia.

Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is an infection caused by a parasitic worm that lives in fresh water in subtropical and tropical regions.

Opio says treatment against Bilharzia targets children between 5-14 years and will carried out in the schools along Lake Albert shores in Kyangwali and Kabwoya sub-county.

He notes that last week, they trained Village Heath Teams, teachers and health workers to carry out the exercise.

Wilson Barungi, the Kikuube district Bilharzia focal person says Biliharzia prevalence in Kikuube district is 90% and the population at risk is 60,000 people.
