Women farmers in the Hoima City have been equipped with skills in cassava value addition as part of efforts to improve on household incomes and reduce post-harvest losses.<\/p>\n

The three-day training that has concluded today at Hoima Kolping Hotel in Hoima East division has been organized by the Bunyoro Women Development Network (BUWODEN), in partnership with Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Network (UWEAL), and funded by Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa<\/a>\u00a0(COMESA).<\/p>\n

The hands-on training brought together women under BUWODEN involved in cassava growing and were skilled on transforming raw cassava into high-value products such as high-quality cassava flour, chips, pancakes, Chappatis and bagiya among others for both local and export markets.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the training, Davis Beingana, the Ass RCC for Hoima West division commended BUWODEN and UWEAL for embracing value addition as it has been emphasized by President Museveni. He says President Museveni is already advocating for exporting of processed products than raw goods in order to earn the country more revenue.<\/p>\n

Beingana said value addition is in line with the Parish Development Model among other government programs which prioritize enterprises that add value to agricultural products.<\/p>\n

Samuel Kaheesi, the Hoima City production officer commended the women farmers for embracing cassava growing saying statistics show Hoima City is still performing poorly in terms of food security and nutrition security with many people prioritizing eating to get full instead of what nutrients are they putting in their bodies adding that cassava is a good and health food for consumption and a raw material for agro processing industries.<\/p>\n

Kaheesi rallied other farmers in the City and Bunyoro region at large to embrace cassava growing due to the many benefits and its ability to withstand the changing climate and weather conditions in the region.<\/p>\n

The Executive Director of BUWODEN, Sylvia Nalumaga revealed that following the conclusion of the training of trainers, the equipped women farmers will now reach out to other women to transfer the same skills of cassava growing and value addition to ensure same quality of production which will enhance better market linkages and increased incomes. She notes women have been engaged in growing cassava but each on their own scale and quality however with the training, the growing of cassava is going to improve for better.<\/p>\n

Nalumaga revealed they want to see women in Hoima City and beyond embrace commercial growing of cassava in order to help them move from subsistence farming to agribusiness and money economy.<\/p>\n

Nalumaga also noted for a long time, women have been selling raw cassava at very low prices however the training has showed that through value addition tubers of cassava can make flour, snacks and animal feeds which fetch more income and household development.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of the trained women farmers, Beatrice Nyamahunge commended the entities which have come together to train them in cassava growing and value chain saying they will use the skills to empower the rest of the farmers and also harness commercial agriculture for high returns from the crop.<\/p>\n
