{"id":11490,"date":"2026-08-19T10:42:53","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spicemedia.ug\/spicefm\/?p=11490"},"modified":"2026-08-19T10:42:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T10:42:53","slug":"media-urged-to-expose-finance-related-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spicemedia.ug\/spicefm\/2026\/08\/19\/media-urged-to-expose-finance-related-crimes\/","title":{"rendered":"Media Urged to Expose Finance Related Crimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Vincent Ssenyunja<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Media practitioners in Uganda have been urged to play a leading role in exposing financial crimes and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The call was made during a one-day training workshop for journalists held at HB Hotel in Hoima city, organized by the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The training focused on strengthening the media\u2019s role in reporting financial crimes and promoting transparency in financial transactions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking at the workshop as a Chief guest, Hajj Badru Mugabi, the Hoima Resident City commissioner, warned journalist and the Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs) to exercise caution when handling unusually large deposits, noting that some transactions could be linked to money laundering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mugabi explained that individuals involved in money laundering are increasingly shifting their operations to SACCOs and other money organizations rather than commercial banks because some SACCOs operate with weaker financial control systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mugabi that suspects often use third parties to carry out transactions in order to conceal the real ownership of assets. In some cases, individuals, including public officials, register property in the names of other people to avoid suspicion and evade detection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mugabi asked journalists to disseminate the information to the public since mobile money scammers and other related theft cases have increased.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He further urged journalists to interest themselves in understanding more about money laundering saying many scammers are now using technology to scam people.<\/p>\n<h1>The Financial Intelligence Authority Spokesman Jossy Muhangi while engaging journalists at HB Hotel Hoima also\u00a0rallied\u00a0practitioners\u00a0to join the fight against Money Laundering<\/h1>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Muhangi explained that although Financial Intelligence Authority is a semi-autonomous entity, it cannot work in isolation to achieve its mission and objectives and therefore need stakeholders like the media to win its wars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He also said that Financial Intelligence Authority works with other competent organizations like Uganda Revenue Authority, Inspectorate of Government, Uganda Police, Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Director of Public Prosecutions in investigations in order to fulfill their mandate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Vincent Ssenyunja Media practitioners in Uganda have been urged to play a leading role in exposing financial crimes and money laundering.
