Leaders and residents in the\u00a0Bunyoro sub-region are mourning the death of Peter Banura, the Kikuube LC5 Chairperson, who died following a road accident along the Hoima\u2013Fort Portal road in Kikuube District.\u00a0The accident occurred on Saturday evening at around 8:20 p.m. at Butyamba Cell, Kikuube Town Council, leaving two other people critically injured. The victims, whose identities are yet to be established, were rushed to health facilities in Kikuube District and Hoima City.<\/p>\n
According to preliminary police reports, Banura had parked his official Toyota Hilux (UG3400084) by the roadside and was speaking to a group of people when a speeding Toyota Hiace taxi (UBQ 853E) traveling from Fort Portal towards Hoima rammed into them, causing critical injuries.\u00a0Banura was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead on arrival.<\/p>\n
Police have attributed the accident to over-speeding and reckless driving by the taxi driver, who remains at large.\u00a0Tributes have poured in from across the region. Pius Wakabi, the Bugahya County Member of Parliament, described Banura as \u201ca dedicated, intellectual, intelligent, and resourceful person who was always approachable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prime Mnister Robinah Nabbanja who is also the Kakumiro Woman MP has described the deceased as a committed leader. “I am saddened to hear of the passing of Araali Peter Banura, the Kikuube District Chairman. His death is a huge loss to Kikuube and Uganda at large. He was a young man deeply committed to leadership and service. As the pioneer LCV Chairperson of Kikuube, he was dedicated to the progress of the district and the wellbeing of its people. We have lost a very humble man who still had much life ahead of him. I convey my heartfelt condolences to his family, especially his father, Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza. May God comfort and strengthen them during this difficult time” the PM wrote on X.<\/p>\n
Uthman Kadir Mugisa, Hoima LCV Chairperson, said Banura\u2019s death is \u201ca big loss to Bunyoro,\u201d while Godwine Angalia, Kikuube RDC, described him as a \u201cpeace-loving leader.\u201d\u00a0Other leaders, including MP-elect Ismail Kasule, Hoima City Mayor Brian Kaboyo, and Kikuube LCV Vice Chairperson Vincent Alpha Opio, lauded Banura\u2019s leadership, noting his role in inspiring youth, fighting land grabbing, and driving development initiatives.<\/p>\n
Stephen Aseera Itaza, Buhaguzi East MP, described him as friendly and down-to-earth. At the same time, Christopher Nkalu, Kikuube District Council Speaker, said Banura was \u201cthe fountain and a development-oriented person who shall be missed.\u201d By the time this story was published, Banura\u2019s body had been transferred to Mengo Hospital for postmortem.<\/p>\n
Banura, the son of Major Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza, Uganda\u2019s Ambassador to Burundi, was first elected LC5 Chairperson for Kikuube in 2021. He was re-elected in the recent local government elections, polling 37,455 votes, defeating Phenekansi Timanyire of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who garnered 6,230 votes.\u00a0His death comes barely three years after the tragic road accident that claimed Kadir Kirungi, former Hoima LC5 Chairperson, in March 2023.<\/p>\n
Kirungi, 47, died along with his bodyguard, Police Constable Bosco Otim, when his Prado vehicle collided with a Fuso truck along the Hoima\u2013Kampala road in Kateera village, Kiboga district.\u00a0According to a 2025 police crime report, Uganda recorded 26,044 road traffic crashes, up from 25,107 in 2024, highlighting ongoing concerns over road safety.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
