UPDF Officer Shoots Civilian Dead in Masindi

Police in Masindi district are holding Aggrey Byamugisha, a Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) officer at a rank of corporal on allegations of shooting a civilian dead.

The deceased has been only identified as Mugisha, 32, a hawker in Masindi town. The incident happened in the wee hours of Saturday morning at around 2AM, in Kijura North Cell, Central Division of Masindi Municipality.

SP Pensive Tukasiima, the district police commander (DPC) told our reporter in an interview that they were informed by the boda boda about the incident and they immediately rushed to the scene only to discover one person had been shot dead and the suspect had already escaped.

She disclosed that through the intelligence; they managed to arrest the suspect and recovered the gun. Currently, the suspect is detained at Masindi Central Police Station and the gun is in the custody of police.

Tukasiima asserted that by the time of incident, Byamugisha was donning civilian attires, white jacket and green gumboots thus suspected him to be one of the security personnel. She assured the public of justice for the slain civilian.

Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident adding that investigations into the matter are underway.

Efforts to get a comment from Sunday Geoffrey, the Public Relations Officer for Artillery Division were futile by press time since his known number was unavailable
