Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has declared war on corruption, announcing that the majority of the 2025/26 alternative budget priority areas will focus on combating this vice.

“Corruption remains the single biggest roadblock to our nation’s progress,” Mr Ssenyonyi emphasised. “Year after year, Ugandans are told that resources are scarce, yet we continue to see trillions lost to mismanagement, inflated contracts, and outright theft.”

He was telling colleagues at the workshop held at Parliament on Monday (March 10, 2025). The meeting that was held under the theme Combating Corruption: The Sure Way to Effective Service Delivery attracted stakeholders from government and civil society.

This bold move comes on the heels of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary caucus’s decision to tackle corruption among the government’s top budget priorities.

Finance junior Minister, Mr Henry Musasizi, revealed that the government plans to commit at least Shs198.7 Billion to anti-corruption efforts in 2025/26.

The decision to prioritize anti-corruption efforts has been welcomed by many, who see it as a crucial step towards addressing the country’s economic woes.

“Corruption is a cancer that has eaten deep into the fabric of our society,” said Mr Ssenyonyi. “We must take bold action to root it out, and that’s exactly what we’re doing with our alternative budget.”
