The government, through the Ministry of Water and Environment, under the Department of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation, has finalized plans for a Shs 4.2 billion solar-powered water supply and sanitation project in Kabamba and Bugwara trading centers, located in Kabamba and Kicucura sub-counties, Kagadi District.

The project, designed to serve over 20,000 families, is a significant boost for the local community, which has long relied on unprotected water sources. The contract for the construction of the water project has been awarded to GAT Consults Limited, and the construction work is expected to be completed within one year.

Godfrey Byarugaba, a Senior Engineer in the Department of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation, explained that key components of the project will include the installation of solar panels to pump water from the source to reservoir tanks. Additional infrastructure to be built as part of the project will include a pump house, water system, guard house, fencing, toilet facilities, and water tanks, among other vital components.

Byarugaba emphasized that the goal of the project is to address the severe water shortage in the two trading centers, where current water coverage levels stand at 32% and 18%, respectively. The project is also expected to significantly reduce health-related diseases by providing clean water to the community.

Rogers Benda, a resident of Bugwara trading center, expressed his excitement about gaining access to clean water, which he believes will greatly alleviate domestic challenges. He applauded both the government and development partners for the initiative and urged the contractor to complete the project within the set timeline.

Rose Kyalisiima, a resident of Kabamba sub-county, explained that the project would allow them to access safe and clean drinking water. Beatrice Kyomuhendo, a resident of Kicucura Trading Center, noted that the initiative would improve water supply coverage for domestic use in the area.

Joan Basemera, also from Kicucura sub-county, agreed that the project would provide safe water access to residents. Kagadi District LC5 Chairman, Ndibwami B. Yosia, welcomed the initiative and emphasized that the project demonstrates the district’s commitment to improving access to clean and safe drinking water. However, he cautioned the contractor to avoid shoddy work, stressing that value for money must be effectively realized.

Jenepher Kyomuhendo Mbabazi, the Kagadi District Woman MP, also lauded the project, stating that it would address the water crisis for both domestic and productive uses, as well as reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases that have been rampant in the district.

Stephen Tibasiima, a resident of Kabamba Trading Center, expressed that the intervention is a milestone that will help address the growing demands for water supply in the area, especially in the face of climate change impacts.
