Butchers in Hoima have announced a demonstration, refusing to slaughter any animals starting Thursday morning, in protest of the continued detention of their chairman, Norman Kimarahunga.
Kimarahunga was arrested a week ago after being called to the police to provide a statement regarding a cow found at the Kiryatete slaughterhouse without a proper mark.
The butchers have stated that the protest will continue until their chairman is released.
On Wednesday last week, police in Hoima summoned Norman Kimarahunga the Hoima Butcher men association chairman, to make a statement to police over a cow that was found in their slaughter in Kiryatete without a proper mark.
Following several demands to have Kimarahunga released but with no positive response from security, these have resolved for a demonstration not to slaughter cows until their chairman is released.
Sharif Muhanuzi, a butcher man, said they can’t continue working with their chairman in detention with no clear reason.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson said they held Kimarahunga to help them in their investigation over cattle theft that had increased in Hoima area and Bunyoro at large.
