More than 3,500 flood victims in Buliisa District have renewed calls for the government to resettle them.
The floods displaced thousands of people in Butiaba and Kigwera Sub counties and Butiaba town council in Buliisa district since March 2020. The floods submerged several homes destroying household property.
In August 2021, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja said that the government will acquire land and resettle the victims. But to date, some of the flood victims are still stuck in churches.
Victor Kyomuhendo, a resident of Wanseko landing site says it is unfortunate that the government has taken a long to acquire land and have them resettled.
Rosemary Akumu, a flood victim at Butiaba landing site in Butiaba town council says she has lost hope of being resettled by the government after spending close to three years without any intervention from the government.
Peter Kyomuhendo, a resident of Kabolwa landing site in Buliisa sub-county says the government should consider flood victims in Buliisa and have them resettled since currently they don’t have anywhere to settle.
Fred Lukumu, the Buliisa LCV Chairperson says that they submitted to the government the list of all the affected persons but to date, they have not received any response.
Stephen Byaruhanga Mfashingabo, the Buliisa Resident District Commissioner called on the flood victims to be patient saying the government is doing all it can to have them resettled.
He however does not mention the progress the government has made to have the victims resettled.
