A pastor in Masindi is in police custody for allegedly flouting the presidential directive on religious gathering.

The Pastor has been identified as Winfred Ayesiga 39, a resident Kihaguzi village B, Labbongo Sub County in Masindi district.

Edina Nyinereza, the officer in charge of Masindi central police station says they got a tip off by area residents that the pastor was still conducting prayers and allowing many of his believers to access her church despite a presidential directive that banned religious gatherings as one of the ways of curtailing the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Following the tip off, police on Friday raided Ayesiga’s church where they found more than 20 people praying in her church prompting them to arrest her.

She was immediately whisked to Masindi Central police station. The other believers who were praying in her church escaped and vanished.

Nyinereza added that Ayesiga was later charged with negligent act that is likely to spread an infectious disease and that her case file was being processed in order for her to appear in court.

The police officer warned that police will not tolerate any person violating the COVID-19 guidelines and she appealed to the residents to be on the lookout for such people and immediately inform police.
