Police in Kikuube district on Wednesday exhumed the body of a newly born baby boy that was allegedly killed and buried by the mother in Maya A- village, Igwanjura parish in Kabwoya sub-county.
It’s reported that on the 10th of February 2021, Maureen Nyakato, a resident of the same place reportedly gave birth at night to a baby boy, strangled the baby to death and later secretly buried the body the following morning.
Steven Buryahika, the LC3 chairman for Kabwoya sub-county admits the incident saying Nyakato was arrested following a tipoff to police from the village chairman.
A police official who preferred to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak to media said police detectives including a pathologist conducted a postmortem on the body and later re-buried it.
According to police, Nyakato reportedly strangled the baby after separating with the husband.
Buryahika has condemned the act saying it was uncalled for since as children have the right to life. He says domestic violence is on the rise and costing lives.
In 2017, a woman identified as Scovia Asiimwe in Kyakirubi village in Bugambe Sub also killed her newly born baby with a rat poison and buried the body after failing to identify the father.
Asiimwe reportedly approached two different men with each denying responsibility for the pregnancy and hence killed the baby.
