Residents of Wanseko Town Council in Buliisa District have been urged to construct and use toilets to improve sanitation and prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases during the ongoing rainy season.
The appeal was made by the LC3 Chairperson of Wanseko Town Council, Robert Matyansi in an interview with Spice FM, who said although some residents have responded to the government’s sanitation campaign, many are still reluctant because persistent flooding along the shores of Lake Albert has made toilet construction difficult.
Matyansi noted that continuous flooding has forced many families to relocate several times in search of safer ground, while others have left the area due to fishing enforcement operations that have affected livelihoods.
He appealed to the government to provide permanent solutions, including support for the construction of durable sanitation facilities.
The Town Clerk of Wanseko Town Council, Samuel Magambo, said the local authority is working closely with security agencies, especially the police, to enforce sanitation regulations.
He said owners of permanent buildings without toilets have been directed to construct them, while new developers are required to prioritize building toilets before other structures.
Meanwhile, the Buliisa District Health Educator, Probert Mugabe, emphasized that every household should have a toilet and proper waste disposal facilities such as dustbins to reduce the risk of diseases including cholera.
He warned against settling in waterlogged areas where sanitation facilities cannot be properly constructed, saying such practices continue to pose serious public health risks.
