The Hoima City education officer has warned schools and parents against time wastage of their children which is affecting their academic performance.

The city registered 693 first grades in last year’s primary leaving examinations missing their target of 1000 first grades even though they registered an improvement from the 666 first grades they had registered in 2024.

Now, according to Johnson Kusiima Baingana, many schools are fond of early closure of academic terms and delayed teaching at the opening of new terms which in the end affects the children’s performance. Kusiima also adds that teachers especially in government schools have continued to abscond from duty while others leave their duty stations before the normal time.

On the side of parents Baingana says many parents have continued to delay their children at home yet schools have already opened and classes have begun lessons.

Baingana has now asked schools and parents to work together and ensure children get quality education in order to hit targets of good performance.

Mr. Ayebale Moses, the headteacher Duhaga girls’ primary school and Chairperson of Primary School head teachers in the city has commended the city education department for encouraging the schools to effectively use the learners’ time as a way of ensuring good performance

He has asked parents to send all children in schools and provide all requirements to them to facilitate effective education.

Mr. Bright Nicholas, the headteacher of Nest of Harmon primary school says there is need to conduct strong supervision to tame teacher absenteeism and asked parents to put pressure on school for better performance.
