Local leaders in Hoima City have tasked authorities at the Hoima Regional Referral Hospital and Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to improve on the power stability at the facility in order to save more lives accessing treatment services.

The call comes at a time when the Hoima East division council Gift Ahuniriza is mourning the loss of his wife and a baby who died from the regional hospital on Tuesday due to reported negligence. Several leaders say power went off at the facility and there was no immediate solution for a working generator at a time when the now deceased mother was fighting for life in the theatre at the facility after giving birth to her baby.

Idd Magezi the Hoima East division male division councilor blames the facility leaders for continued negligence which has led to the loss of lives especially when power goes off and there is no immediate generator to continue operations at the facility.

He has called for improved services at the facility especially as the City prepares to host the 2027 AFCON games where the population is expected to rapidly increase piling more pressure and demand for services.

Lawrence Katwesige, the Hoima East division speaker wonders how power can go off at such an important institution of government like Hoima Regional where very many lives are supposed to be save each second. He has condemned the act of negligence by the staff who were in charge on the day when the incident happened and asks government to take action to ensure improved service delivery at the facility.

Jonan Kiiza the Spokesperson of Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) says they always give a first priority to facilities like Hoima Regional Referral Hospital adding that power is meant to remain available all the time supported by a standby generator.

Our effort to get a comment from the Acting Hospital Director remain futile by the time of filing this story since he was still engaged in a meeting.
