Kakumiro LCI Chairperson Hacked to Death

Unknown assailants have raided Kamugole village, Nkoko Sub-county in Kakumiro district, hacking the LCI Chairperson to death.

The deceased has been identified as Benon Byaruhanga, 58. The incident happened on Tuesday night at around 11 p.m, in the same area.

Available information obtained by Uganda Radio Network reveals that the assailants, while armed with machetes, waylaid the village chairperson as he was riding his motorcycle registration number UEC 918Z Bajaj. He was returning home from Kamugole trading center. The assailants also made off with the motorcycle to an unknown destination.

Bonny Kyaligonza, a resident, says they heard Byaruhanga screaming for help and rushed only to find him lying dead in a pool of blood. He says the assailants hacked him severely on the head,face, and chest, killing him on the spot.

Mary Tumusiime, another resident, says the deceased was last seen at Kamugole trading center at around 10 p.m while in good health, but was shocked when she received information that the village Chairperson had been killed.

Moses Musinguzi, the Nkoko sub-county LC3 Chairperson, has condemned the incident and appealed to the police to thoroughly investigate the matter, stating that following the gruesome murder, area residents are living in fear.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, has confirmed the incident, adding that preliminary police investigations indicate that the village chairperson was attacked and killed by five individuals who were trailing him as he was returning home from Kamugole trading center.

He says that detectives have already been deployed in the area to investigate the murder and that the deceased’s body has been retrieved from the crime scene and conveyed to the Kakumiro Health Center IV mortuary, where it is currently lying pending post-mortem examination.

Hakiza has appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the security team deployed on the ground by providing crucial information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects, for justice to prevail.
