Local leaders in Burora Sub-County, Kagadi District, have launched a manhunt for a man only identified as Byaruhanga, a resident of Karambi Village, who is accused of cutting off his girlfriend’s hand.

The victim has been identified as Federesi Akugizibwe, also a resident of Karambi Village in Burora Sub-County. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon. Speaking to our reporter from St. Luke Clinic in Burora Trading Centre, Akugizibwe said Byaruhanga is the father of her first child, but the two separated a long time ago.

She explained that their child recently fell sick and was admitted to Bajungu Medical Services in Mabaale Town Council, where Byaruhanga reportedly paid a medical bill of 100,000 Shillings. She said he has since been demanding a refund, which may have led to the dispute.

The Vice Chairperson of Karambi Village, Galas Asiimwe, said that Byaruhanga reportedly attacked Akugizibwe while she was on her way home after attending Christmas prayers at Kihumurro Church.

Asiimwe added that the suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack and is believed to have escaped to Kikuube District. He noted that local leaders, together with the community, have launched a search for the suspect so that he can be arrested and brought to justice.

The victim’s father, John Bakesigaki, said he was shocked by the attack and called on government and security agencies to intervene and ensure justice is served.

Godfrey Tumussime, a resident of Kayembe Village, appealed to the general public to cooperate with local leaders and security personnel in the search for the suspect.

Luke Ngabirano, the in-charge of St. Luke Clinic, said the victim sustained serious injuries to both arms, and that medical workers managed to stop bleeding before administering further treatment.

Bakesigaki had taken his daughter’s severed hand to Burora Police Post to aid investigations by the time of filing this story.
