Residents of Kibaale Town Council and Bwamiramira Sub-county  in Kibaale district are counting losses after a heavy downpour, accompanied by a violent hailstorm and strong winds, destroyed acres of garden crops and left 22 houses unroofed on Tuesday evening.
The most affected areas are Ngangi A Village in Kibaale Town Council, as well as Kikaada and Kiyanda villages in Bwamiramira Sub-county.
Leonard Kayonga, the Chairperson of Ngangi A Village, said the storm ravaged banana, cassava, maize gardens, and unroofed houses more than 100 houses.
He appealed for urgent support from government authorities and good Samaritans. He further advised residents to plant trees around their homes as a protective measure against such disasters.
One of the affected residents, Rosemary Namukisa, whose house was completely unroofed, pleaded for immediate assistance from well-wishers and political leaders.
When contacted, the Kibaale District Production Officer, Hassan Matovu, said he would conduct an assessment and compile a report to be forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office for intervention. He also urged residents to embrace tree planting and avoid deforestation to reduce the impact of future disasters.
