The low turn up of pupils in government schools registered on Monday as teachers resumed duty has raised serious concerns among the education stakeholders in Hoima district.

On Monday October 20, most teachers across primary and government schools resumed duty following weeks of industrial action however district inspectors and education officers who visited the schools reported a low turn up of learners raising concerns of their whereabouts after more than a month at home.

Ms. Harriet Kihumuro, the Hoima district education officer (DEO) has noted that it is worrying that at some schools even the primary seven candidates who are slated to kick off their UNEB examinations on October 31 are yet to report for school and now questions are increasing over their performance when results are released early next year.

Kihumuro has now rallied local leaders including political, religious, cultural among others to mobilize parents to send their children back to school immediately because the remaining days for third term are running out because when these children remain at home, it will increase school dropouts which may turn them into a burden in the villages.

She adds that some parents are still keeping the children in gardens and had relaxed as the teachers’ strike ensued adding that now is the time to rush the children back to school.
