As Uganda prepares to celebrate the 63rd Independence Day tomorrow, local leaders in Hoima and Kikuube districts have highlighted the need of empowering the local communities economically in order to boost their household income.

According to the leaders, many locals in the rural setting are yet to witness full independence as the country still struggles with high levels of borrowing from the first world countries who continue to influence the politics and the economics of the country.

Uganda obtained her independence on October 9, 1962, from the British government however Mr. Jamil Kasangaki, the Buhanika Sub County LCIII Chairperson says Uganda still looks up to the outside world for assistance through growing levels of borrowing, which he says requires revision by the top leaders through empowering the citizens economically and in turn, raising the levels of productivity in the country.

Kasangaki says as the country celebrates her independence, there is need to embrace skilling of the youths in order to enhance job creation which he sees as a lasting solution to the high levels of unemployment.

Mr. Peter Banura, the LCV Chairperson for Kikuube district, says since Independence, the country has witnessed developments of her own, and now challenges the Kikuube residents to take up the existing opportunities enhanced by the current peace and stability to empower themselves economically especially now that the oil resource was discovered in the region, and activities have since been intensified,

The 63rd Independence Day will be celebrated at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds under the theme: ’63 Years of Independence: A Reason to Double Our Efforts in Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation’.
