Renowned long-distance runner Moses Kipsiro has launched an athletics training camp in Bukwo District to identify, nurture, and support young athletic talent from the region. The camp, which currently accommodates more than 30 athletes, is fully funded by Kipsiro himself, who also serves as head coach and primary caretaker, providing the athletes with food, training, and accommodation.

Kipsiro says the initiative is part of his commitment to reviving athletics in Bukwo, a region famous for producing world-class runners but lacking sustained institutional support. “Most sports stakeholders in this district have reduced athletics to a fitness activity, ignoring its potential for sustainability and livelihood,” Kipsiro said. “Many of the talented athletes here come from humble backgrounds and often miss out on quality education, making sports their only viable opportunity.”

A Commonwealth Games medalist and one of Uganda’s most respected figures in athletics, Kipsiro used the occasion to urge government and development partners to invest in sports infrastructure and youth development programs, saying the burden of supporting young athletes has been left to individuals.

“I want to thank Joshua Cheptegei for standing up and supporting athletics in Uganda. He understands the importance of giving back and ensuring that those who cannot sustain themselves or their families through education have an alternative through sports,” he added.

The Bukwo camp is expected to serve not only as a training ground but also as a haven for aspiring athletes, particularly those from rural communities who lack access to mentorship and proper facilities. Kipsiro emphasized that with better coordination and support, athletics can play a pivotal role in promoting Uganda internationally, both through sports tourism and global competition.
