Police in Kikuube district have arrested 21 suspects for engaging in illegal activities within Bugoma Central Forest Reserve, leading to the destruction of 40 hectares of recently restored bamboo trees.
The operation, carried out by the Regional Environment Police Force under Budongo Systems Range, followed a tip-off from concerned community members.
The suspects, now in custody, include Mawelele Ausi, Muhereza Kuganyira Mugisha, Braka Bernard, Mubangizi Stanley, Wantaba George, Atugonza Edward, Bhati John, Sibwomana Peter, Ushimemana Corod, Mugisha Bariyanga, Dediero Rorema, Mbagizimana Ezekiel, Kaguhangire William, Ndagize Jappali, Byamungu Emmanuel, Ndayambaze Innocent, Ndagizimana Alex, Hakizimana Wame, and Wanyagasame Vianney.
Superintendent of Police Kaggwa Augustine, who heads the Regional Environment Police Force in the Budongo Systems Range, confirmed the arrests and emphasized the force’s commitment to protecting Uganda’s natural resources.
“These individuals were found engaging in destructive activities within the Bugoma CFR, undermining government-led restoration efforts. We will not tolerate such acts of environmental sabotage,” SP Kaggwa stated.
The National Forestry Authority (NFA) recently restored 100 hectares of bamboo and 150 hectares of indigenous tree species in Bugoma Central Forest Reserve, which spans approximately 41,144 hectares. The destruction of 40 hectares of bamboo is a major setback in the Authority’s conservation and restoration drive.
Aldon Walukamba, Communications and Public Relations Manager at the NFA, praised the swift response by police and local leaders.
“We commend the vigilance of both the police and local communities. Their prompt action is a strong message that Ugandans are increasingly taking ownership of forest protection,” Walukamba noted. “Conserving Bugoma is not just about trees—it’s about climate resilience, biodiversity, and the well-being of future generations.”
The suspects will be charged under relevant forestry and environmental protection laws as investigations continue. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing all individuals involved in forest crimes and ensuring the full recovery and protection of Uganda’s forest estates.
