Communities Urged to Work with Police to Tackle Cattle Theft

Communities in Bunyoro have been urged to work with police in order to tackle the issue of rampant cattle thefts in the region.

This call follows the arrest of three suspected cattle thieves in Masindi district in Kinyamurara village. The incident occurred on March 17, where suspected stolen cattle were found tied in a swamp.

The suspects are Busobozi Lawrence Farouk and Mukonyezi Alex. One of the suspects, Busobozi Lawrence Farouk, owns a butcher shop in Masindi town and deals in buying and selling cattle.

According to Julius Allan Hakiiza, the Albertine police spokesperson, the stolen cattle originated from Masindi and surrounding districts, including Nakasongola and Kiryandongo. Three cows were stolen from different farms, with 20 more pending identification by their owners. The suspects kept the stolen cattle on Mukonyezi’s farm in Kinyamurara village.

Nowc Hakiiza has urged the community in the region to report all cattle theft to the police for proper follow-up and immediate action. He adds that all cattle movements within and across the district must have veterinary reports and movement permits and residents must be expected to comply with this regulation adding that locals must keep vigilant to report any suspected cattle thieves.
