Jacob Kiplimo Sets New Half Marathon World Record in Barcelona

Uganda long-distance runner Jacob Kiplimo set a new world record during the Barcelona Half Marathon in Spain on Sunday.

The reigning world cross country gold medalist completed the 21km race in 56 minutes and 42 seconds to defeat Spanish Josep Solà Benítez who crossed the finish line in 57 minutes and 38 seconds.

Ivan Serrano Hernandez also from Spain finished third position in the time of   57 minutes, 59 seconds.

Kiplimo says, he is over impressed with Joy for the spectacular performance exhibited in Barcelona. “It wasn’t easy but with the courage and the training I underwent back home in Kapchorwa, I was able to deliver this big achievent.” Said Kiplimo.

Kiplimo’s record-breaking performance also earned him to become the first man ever to run a half, Marathon under 57 minutes.

Kiplimo surpassed the previous world record of 57 minutes and 30 seconds, held by Ethiopia’s Yomive Kajacha.

Peter Chelangat, Kiplimo’s Local coach says, they will now shift their focus to London Marathon. “We also look forward to register success in London just as we did today in Barcelona” Says Chelangat.
