A woman has been detained at Pakwach Central Police Station for allegedly stealing a three-day-old baby from Pakwach Health Centre IV. West Nile Regional Police spokesperson, SP Asea Collins, identified the suspect as Teddy Gipatho, also known as Patricia, a resident of Pajobi North Cell, Puvungu West Ward, Pakwach Town Council, Pakwach District.
According to the police statement, the incident occurred on December 7, 2024. The mother of the newborn, Afoyorwoth Patricia, 19, had undergone a Cesarean section (C-section) and remained under medical care when the baby was stolen.
The statement further reveals that the suspect gained access to the ward where the baby was and took the child. The facility management and police were immediately alerted, and with the help of the community, the baby was recovered on December 8, around 3:00 a.m. from a garden at Pajobi North Cell.
Asea confirmed that the baby was safely reunited with her mother after a medical check ensured her health was stable. Detectives processed the scene, documented evidence, and recorded witness statements. The suspect reportedly confessed to her actions.
“The incident was reported on December 8, 2024, under CRB/706/2024,” the statement reads in part. The Uganda Police Force appreciates the cooperation of the community and assures the public of its commitment to resolving this matter, with further updates to be provided as inquiries continue.
