The staff of Kabwoya Health Center III in Kabwoya sub-county, Kikuube district have been accused of alleged harassment of patients and absenteeism.
Patients who spoke to Uganda Radio Network (URN) noted that staff at the health center are too harsh. Most patients have also been turned away at the health facility due to the absence of the workers.
The residents and patients seeking medical attention at the facility have also attacked the health center in charge Gerevansio Muhangi for failing to take action on the conduct of the staff.
Hebert Turyatemba, the Chairperson LCI for Nyangabi village says, at times patients spend the whole day without being treated due to the absence of health workers at the facility. On top of that he says, the health workers are too harsh and untouchable. He wonders why such health workers should be maintained at the health facility.
Sarah Olyera, a resident of Kabwoya trading center says, most of the health workers do not report for duty on weekends leaving patients stranded. She demands that the government take appropriate disciplinary action against the health workers.
Edson Ngabirano, the LCII Chairperson for Kikonda Parish says, the health workers have failed to deliver up to the expectations of members of the public stating that, this has compelled some patients to forego treatment at the health facility.
Gerevasio Muhangi, the in-charge of the health facility has however refuted the allegations, saying that, they are meant to tarnish their image before the public.
Edward Musingye, the Kikuube Chief Administrative Officer-CAO says, his office has received complaints against health workers at the facility and other health centers in the district. He adds that his office will delete names of health workers from the payroll who will be found guilty of absenteeism from duty.
Amlan Tumusiime, the Kikuube Resident District Commissioner-RDC says, his office will not tolerate absenteeism and harassment of patients by health workers cautioning them to respect their profession.
Statistics at the health center indicate that the facility receives between 100 to 150 patients daily. The facility has 15 staff out of the recommended 53.
