The Kagadi district security committee led by the RDC Lillian Ruteraho on Monday moved on with the operation to crackdown on wetland encroachers to Buyaga East constituency where several acres of crops grown in Muhumbu wetland in Kagadi town council were not spared.
Among the destroyed crops grown in Muhumbu wetland in Kagadi town council were maize gardens, cabbage, sugar cane plantations cut down, beans, cassava, egg plants, among other things.
The operation that has entered second week began in greater Bwikara Sub-County last week where several acres of crops in wetlands were also destroyed and suspected encroachers arrested.
The enforcement team has also discovered that the encroachers in Kyengaju Lc1 have drained and grown crops in the wetlands that supply Kagadi town with water, likely to cause water scarcity in the town if the interventions to protect the water logged areas are not urgently enforced.
Shortly after the operation, the Kagadi RDC Lillian Ruteraho said the operation followed continuous sensitization to communities to leave wetlands but they became adamant.
She adds that they have a presidential directive to protect the wetlands without sparing anyone, asking the locals to stop politicizing the operations to protect the wetlands.
