As infrastructural developments gain momentum in Hoima City and Bunyoro at large, traffic in the city has also increased creating pressure and the need to adhere to road safety requirements and regulations.
Micheal Kananura, the spokesperson Directorate of Traffic Police says Hoima city is witnessing a surge in traffic due to developments something he says is increasing the risk of incidents and accidents.
Kananura while speaking to Spice FM says with the surge in traffic, there is an increase in the risk of pedestrians being knocked down due to motorists and others riders who lack respect for road signs and regulations.
He adds that pedestrians, according to traffic police reports are the most victims of accidents.
The traffic police spokesperson says road users should stop road indiscipline in Hoima city like drunk driving, pedestrians walking with headsets on among others. He calls on other drivers to respect other road users to ensure they reduce on accidents
According to the Uganda Police’s annual performance report of 2023, 632 pedestrians were killed while crossing the road, 566 were killed while walking along the road whereas 145 were killed while standing along the road. The report further noted there 4086 road fatalaties recorded in 2023 alone something that calls for vigilance in road use.
