Hoima city council has Monday approved a UGX 24.371billion budget for the new financial year 2024/25 with works, health and education sectors taking the lion’s share.
The budget which was approved in a council sitting held at HB Hotel higher than the current budget and indicates an increase in revenue estimates to 3.3 Billion shillings from 2 Billion shillings as planned in the current financial year.
While presenting the budget estimates before the council chaired by the speaker Edward Isingoma, Sylvia Nalumaga Balyesiima, the leader of government business in the council revealed as a city they plan to invest more funds in urban agriculture where 50% of city dwellers still depend on the sector for survival.
She adds that they will also invest in people through human capital development including provision of education and health services.
Nalumaga notes that government has maintained 1 billion shillings strictly for road maintenance as guided by parliament.
Patrick Mugabi the Chairperson of general purpose committee says their budget review recommended the full operationalisation of the city abattoir and obtaining land for the city public cemetery. The recommendations by the committee were also approved by the full house.
Idd Magezi the secretary for production revealed in the new financial year they are to embark on sensitizing communities on urban farming and the operations of the city abattoir calling the approved budget a people centred one.
The New Year budget will run under the theme “full monetization of the economy through industrialization, expanding and broadening services, digital transformation and market access.
