Shock has gripped residents of Katikara Sub County in Kakumiro district after a 66-year-old man committed suicide by hanging.
The deceased identified as Benard Turyahikayo, was a resident of Kitabona LCI in Katikara Sub County. His body was discovered on Tuesday dangling on a mango tree.
According to James Kweyamba, the owner of the land where Turyahikayo had been staying as a caretaker, the deceased was HIV positive and likely took his own life due to a loss of hope. Prior to hanging himself, he burned all his belongings, including the hut he was living in.
The area vice chairperson, Alexander Yaled Sajja, condemned the act of suicide and urged the community to seek counseling and advice from friends or leaders instead of prematurely ending their lives.
