Kinyara Sugar Works Limited has increased its engagement activities in its areas of operation in order to boost the level of participation and performance in the education sector.
Their engagement activities in the education sector kicked off with the first of its kind educational based quiz competitions which are aimed at improving the image of the education sector. Anold Walukamba, the corporate communications manager Kinyara Sugar Works Limited says the level of appreciation of education has remained low in the sugarcane growing areas adding that they have embarked on engaging the communities to enhance education standards.
Walukamba says the company injects over 54 million shillings annually to support a number of schools under the Kinyara Assisted Primary Schools’ Association (KAPSA) in procuring scholastic materials, accommodation and paying wages of teachers among others.
On Friday, Kinyara Sugar Works Limited conducted an education quiz competition dubbed Kinyara Assisted Primary Schools’ Association quiz in which 10 schools participated. The schools were Kansongoire primary school, Isagara primary school, Ikoba girls primary school, Bulyango primary school, Ikoba boys primary school, Kinyara sugar works primary school, Kabango primary school, Kitonozi primary school and Bulyango public primary school.
The competitions were won by Kabango primary school which obtained 21 points followed by Kinyara primary school with 18 points and Kitonozi primary school became third with 15 points.
Speaking to the press, Eveline Asaba Katusiime the headteacher Kabango primary school says the competitions have provided an opportunity for teachers to know their areas of strengths and weakness as well as providing accountability for classroom work. She adds that they will use this arrangement to double their efforts in a bid to enhance performance in their respective schools.
Meanwhile, Katusiime requested the company to increase on the monthly teachers’ allowances due to current high living standards.
Catherine Matusa, a primary five pupil at Kabango primary school commended the company for the opportunity to share knowledge about different areas amongst the schools in the area.
Kabango primary school was rewarded with UGX 200,000 followed by Kinyara primary school with UGX150,000 while Kitonozi primary school who were the third best school received UGX 100,000.
