The National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Kyagulanyi was on Thursday whisked away by security personnel upon his arrival at Entebbe International Airport.
Kyagulanyi, who arrived at the airport at 10:00 a.m. aboard a Rwanda Air flight was whisked by plain-clothed security personnel as soon as he got out of the plane.
A video clip showing Bobi Wine being grabbed has since gone viral followed by another showing a convoy of cars with police and military personnel driving him to his home.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, issued a brief statement saying that Bobi Wine was safely driven to his home.
“The President of the National Unity Platform, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, has safely returned from his overseas trip. Security agencies accompanied him to his residence in Magere, Kasangati. We extend our appreciation to the security agencies for their efforts in maintaining the safety and security of our nation,” Onyango said.
Although rumors have been circulating on social media that more than 30 NUP members have been arrested since last night, police have remained silent on this. However, Nambeshe told URN that Entebbe Municipality MP Matovu was arrested yesterday when he went to rescue some of his constituents and has since been kept inside Entebbe Policing Division.
“When you talk of arrests, I would start with our President (Bobi Wine), our MP of Entebbe Municipality Moses Matovu, and a number of our members who have been detained. Many journalists have been attacked and injured. Their gadgets have been destroyed,” Nambeshe said.
Since Monday, there has been heightened security deployment along Entebbe Road and all other roads leading to Kyagulanyi’s home in Magere to block his planned welcome party.
Bobi Wine has been overseas mobilizing for party support. This was after he had carried out countrywide mobilization tours where he attracted mammoth crowds.
Maj Gen Godfrey Tumusiime Katsigazi, The Deputy Inspector General of Police, later banned NUP tours claiming they defied gathering guidelines.
