A new report on Uganda’s extractives and mining sector has recommended mainstreaming and systematic disclosure of Extractives Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) data and information in a bid to create awareness about the sector.
This was during a regional stakeholder’s engagement held on Wednesday at Hoima Buffalo Hotel in Hoima City to disseminate the EITI report for the fiscal year 2020/21 and create awareness on beneficial ownership in relation to business and Human Rights organized by BAPENECO working together with Kitara Civil Society Organization (KICSON).
While presenting the sector report for fiscal year 2020-2021, Dan Denis a statistician at Uganda Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (UGEITI) reveals that more awareness needs to be created regarding the sector adding that there is need to create a roadmap for implementation of an open data platform that centralizes all the EITI data.
The report further recommends clear criteria of awarding contracts by government to different companies and individuals and inclusion of the contribution of the informal sector in the mining sector.
Edwin Kanakulya, a compliance officer at UGEITI says Uganda will be validated by the EITI in October for checks and balances regarding the extractives sector.
He challenges locals to interest themselves in seeking information in the report about the sector.
The report tackled the revenues generated from the extractive industries, the national local content policy among others.
