Residents of Kibati Cell, Hoima East have protested what they term as poor disposal and management of garbage that is dumped at the composite plant located in the area.
Hoima City in 2012 received the 2.5billion shillings garbage plant courtesy of the National Environment Management Authority-NEMA and World Bank.
The project was aimed at enhancing sanitation and hygiene through proper garbage disposal and providing the municipal council with an alternative source of revenue through sale of farm manure.
But, for years, the garbage plant that sits on a seven acre piece of land has not been fully functioning with part of it’s land being used for maize growing.
On Friday morning, residents of Kibati have told our reporter that for the past four months, they have been awash with a stench from the garbage which is now always dumped on Bulera-Kyakaliba-Kibati road instead of the managing it from the plant.
Allan Ntegeka the village secretary says the residents this morning blocked part of Kibati road because of the continued poor garbage disposal.
Ntegeka says the city owns seven acres of land in the area for garbage management however the garbage trucks instead dump it in private properties and in the middle of the road.
Aramathan Eria Byonta, the Kibati II cell chairman says because of failure to manage garbage, they are now using contaminated water sources.
Aramathan wants the garbage composite be shifted to Hoima City yard because the leaders have failed to manage it.
