Following the increased illegal construction of various structures in Hoima City, the local government has established the City Building Control Committee a major focus on ensuring sanity in the construction and building activities in the city.
According to section 29 of the Building Control Act, the functions of Building Committees are; to scrutinize and approve building plans, issue building and occupation permits, ensure that the design and construction of buildings and utilities to which the public is to have access cater for persons with disabilities among others.
The building committee is also responsible for issuing building permits after reviewing the building proposals submitted to the council.
The committee which officially starts Work on Wednesday March 29, 2023 is headed by Patrick Mugabi, the workers’ male councilor and chairperson finance and planning committee. Other members include Margret Monday the secretary for works, Felix Mugano, the principal health officer, Charles Kabiri the deputy city clerk, Geofrey Muhumuza the physical planner, Boniventure Kiiza the acting building officer, Ronald Kyamanywa the environment officer and a representative of persons with disabilities.
Speaking to our reporter, Mugabi says the committee will investigate buildings that do not meet the required standards adding that their role is not block development but sanity in building being constructed in the city.
He adds that the buildings whose construction was halted will be handled on case-by-case basis. He challenges building owners to reach out to the committee to ensure their sites are approved for development.
Innocent Ahimbisibwe, the Hoima city clerk implored Hoima City Council to offer maximum support to the committee because the task ahead is challenging and requires collective efforts.
