As hospitals and health centres around the country transformed into coronavirus battle stations where overwhelmed medical teams with limited supplies fight a new, incurable disease, more expectant mothers are deciding it’s safer to give birth at home.
In Buliisa district, the number of expectant mothers seeking antenatal services at Biiso health center IV in Buliisa district has significantly reduced after a five health workers tested positive for Covid-19
Emmalin Natasha, the in-charge of the maternity ward at the facility explains that following the second wave of covid-19 pandemic in the country, the number of expectant mothers seeking antenatal services has reduced due to the fear of contracting COVID-19.
According to Emmalin, out of 70 mothers who used to seek antenatal services at the facility in a month, only 5 mothers attend while the majority now seek services from Traditional Birth Attendants in their respective villages.
However, she calls upon the mothers to embrace the services normally from the facility to avoid health complications that may arise while giving birth from home.
