Several markets in Hoima City are enforcing Covid-19 Standard operating procedures-SOPs.

Many vendors argue that if they fail to observe the SOPs which include social distancing, washing hands and wearing masks, the markets will be closed and affect their income.

Last week President Yoweri Museveni announced a 42-day lockdown. However, markets selling food items were allowed to continue operating on the condition that they maintain the SOPs.

At Duhaga round-about and Hoima Central markets, gazetted handwashing points have been installed at all main entrances.

The vendors have also constituted COVID 19 task force whose mandate is to enforce COVID 19 guidelines in the markets. Members of the task force inspect the markets regularly to ensure that vendors and customers adhere to the guidelines.

Edward Kamukumba, the vendor’s chairperson at Hoima central market says the leadership has scaled up efforts to enforce COVID 19 SOPs.
